Jackson on satellite radio deal

Jackson urges satellite radio deal be contingent on minority leases

From Bloomberg News
(January 15, 2007) Jesse Jackson met the top U.S. communications regulator on Sirius Satellite Radio Inc.’s planned purchase of XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc., according to a company that wants to control some of the broadcasters’ channels.

Jackson met with Federal Communications Commission Chairman Kevin Martin on Dec. 9, according to a filing by Georgetown Partners LLC, a black-owned investment company.

Jackson’s discussion with Martin “was consistent with Georgetown Partners’ filings” urging the FCC to require XM and Sirius to lease at least 20 percent of their channels to minority-controlled firms as a condition of the merger. The FCC posted the filing on its Web site Friday.

Oakwood University - It’s Official

A special meeting of Oakwood’s constituency delegates representing the school’s core groups changed the name of the112-year-old institution on Sunday, December 2,2007.  Appreciating the rich history of the name Oakwood, the delegates’vote for “Oakwood University” brought closure to extensive discussions engaging administrators, faculty, staff, and students during the past several months in efforts to facilitate diversity of input.

The final vote followed two hours of careful deliberation that began 10 years ago in response to questions surrounding strategic planning for the institution’s future direction.  Such discussions provided a springboard for the issue of incorporating graduate program offerings as a part of the institution’s academic goals.

AIDS Epidemic in Alabama

Listen Now

90.3 WBHM | Alabama — Just off Highway 431 in north eastern Alabama sits Boaz. Nestled in the Appalachian foothills this town of 75-hundred was settled by farmers who migrated over from Georgia in the late 1800’s, lured to the area by its lush forests and verdant farmland. Over the years the town’s economy morphed from one built on corn and lumber to one sustained by the exchange of the all mighty American dollar. Boaz was once a mecca of consumerism, home to five outlet malls at one time. People used come from all over the country to shop here but Boaz’s chrysalis as a bargain hunter’s dream wasn’t a permanent thing. The outlet stores are closing down and the town is struggling to regain its economic footing. It’s this place, this town in flux, David Miller calls home.
